Counting the cost in Turkey

Article Abstract:

The Turkish government has been criticised for delays in its response to the earthquake which hit northwestern Turkey on Aug 17 1999. The private sector responded rapidly by using equipment to seek survivors, and private individuals collected supplies. Poor construction techniques led to a higher death toll new homes are needed for the survivors and for Turkey's economy due to the significance of the region. Ordinary Turks have discovered a new confidence from cooperating to deal with the crisis, and they are likely to be more critical of the government.

Counting the doomsday option

Article Abstract:

The Church of England has been hit by a rise in pension payments to retired clergy, to GBP92 mil in 2000 vs GBP58 mil in 1991. Some three quarters of dioceses are now in the red, and the Church is looking at ways to cut costs and boost income.

The conservative French government is restricting immigration through three bills that would limit entry, tighten citizenship and implement other restrictions. Interior minister Charles Pasqua is promoting 'zero immigration.'
