Alexander Lebed turned out to be a victim of his own success. After placing third with a respectable 15% showing in Russia's June 1996 elections, Lebed arranged a cessation to high-casualty hostilities in Chechnya. After four months as national security chief, the popular Mr. Lebed is out of office.
