Cross-strait investment buoys China-Taiwan relations
Article Abstract:
China's military actions during the Taiwanese presidential elections in 1996 have not hampered the growth of investments between both nations. Many Taiwanese investors continue to look to China for new business opportunities in light of China's impressive growth rate. In addition, international trade between the two nations remains strong and is expected to increase by 2.9% annually until 1997. However, China's military initiatives have adversely affected local investor interest in Taiwan. Many Taiwanese investors are wary that a possible renewal of military hostiles may negatively impact their investments.

Dutch flood-safety expertise may aid China
Article Abstract:
China should learn from the Dutch on how to effectively manage floods. For hundreds of years, almost half of the Netherlands has been under sea level. The Dutch know that they cannot have guaranteed protection from floods, and thus they focus on reducing the risk of damage caused by floods rather than on flood-protection measures. The Chinese should also adopt this approach. The Chinese government should let nature take its own course and stop development in areas where the risk of flooding is high such as the flood plains in the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers.
