DEEPER AND DARKER

Article Abstract:

West Bengal State Electricity Board (WBSEB), which has 40,000 employees, has total dues of Rs900 crore. CESC Ltd buys between 300 to 400 mw of power from it. CESC's 500 mw project in Budge is nearing completion. WBSEB has made CESC sign a deal under which CESC will continue to buy 1,550 million units a year. The state electricity board will lose Rs150 crore once CESC stops buying power. WBSEB is planning to set up a rural electrification corporation to take over transmission and distribution (T&D) of domestic and medium voltage rural segment. It is planning to bring all its coal-fired generating stations and Durgapur Projects Ltd under West Bengal Power Development Corporation to cut down on administrative and technical costs. It is planning to keep T&D of the high-tension load and operating of hydel stations at Jaldhaka (35 mw) and Rammam (50 mw) with it to achieve viability. It is planning to set up a Rs900 crore T&D network to utilise its surplus power and set up a 900 mw pump storage scheme at Purulia. It is also considering a joint venture with Northern Telecom of Canada for offering Internet service using its T&D network. (rk)
