DENMARK: EXCISES LIKELY TO BE REDUCED

Article Abstract:

The Danish Taxation Minister Ole Stavad is willing to reduce excises on cigarettes and spirits in order to prevent increasing border trade. According to estimates by the Ministry, the price of a packet of cigarettes should be reduced to DKr 25 in 2004 from the present DKr 31, and the price of an ordinary bottle of spirits to DKr 119 from DKr 161. This means the Government theoretically will lose revenues totaling DKr 1.6bn (USD 0.23bn), but if the excises are not reduced, increased border trade is expected to generate a DKr 1.9bn reduction in Government revenues. The estimates are based on the fact that the so-called 24 hour rule will be abolished in 2004.
