DENMARK: TULIP INTERNATIONAL'S 1998/99 RESULTS

Article Abstract:

Tulip International, the Danish meat processing company, reports a DKr 213mn (USD 30mn) profit for the fiscal 1998/99, down from DKr 222mn in 1997/98, but a DKr 140mn increase compared with 1996/97. Turnover was DKr 3.9bn, down DKr 200mn compared with 1997/98. Through the merger between the two major slaugher-houses Danish Crown and Vestjyske Slagterier, Tulip International has taken over the brands Marburger and Den Gronne Slagter. Exports account for 80% of turnover, compared with 95% before the merger. The company will now focus on marketing the Tulip brand in Denmark, where profitability is lower than on export markets.

DENMARK: PORK EXPORTS LIKELY TO INCREASE

Article Abstract:

Danske Slagterier, the Danish slaughter-house association, expects the value of Danish pork exports to increase to DKr 22.5bn (USD 3.2mn) in 1999 from DKr 21bn in 1998, even though Danish exports of agricultural products decreased by 3.8% in the period January-August. Pork accounts for nearly 50% of agricultural exports. In volumes, pork exports are likely to increase by 7.5% (100,000 tonnes), according to the association, which expects prices to be higher in the latter part of 1999 than in the latter part of 1998.

DENMARK: PORK EXPORTS ON THE INCREASE

Article Abstract:

Danish pork exports are increasing again after a decline in 1998. In 1999, estimated exports totalled DKr 22.5bn (USD 3.1bn), a DKr 1bn increase compared with 1998. The value of the exports in 1997, DKr 24.9bn, is still record high, but the volume was nearly 100,000 tonnes higher in 1999, 1.5mn tonnes. The trade organisation Danske Slagterier expects that the volume remains at about the same level in 2000, but that prices will increase to some extent.
