DENMARK:EFFORTS TO STRENGTHEN AGRICULTURE SECTOR
Article Abstract:
In Denmark, agricultural organisations and the Food Ministry have set up a committee to examine how to improve the competitive power of the Danish agriculture sector in export markets. The aim is to ease certain agricultural costs such as fees pertaining to taxes, food safety and animal welfare which add up to a total of DKr957mn (US$140.7mn) a year. The Agricultural Council calls for more funds to R&D in order to meet with the rising demands regarding the environment, animal welfare, food quality and food safety. The council also states that improved export credit conditions are required.

INVESTERINGSSTOP TRUER LANDBRUGET
Article Abstract:
Net earnings in the Danish agriculture sector will be more than halved this year, from DKr 7bn (USD 1bn) in 1997 to about DKr 3bn. This is the lowest level since 1992-93. Suppliers of agricultural machinery are likely to be affected as investments are expected to be reduced. Henning N rgaard, MD of Jyden Bur and chairman of the trade organisation in the agricultural machinery sector, says the company anticipates a 25% decline in turnover at worst.
