DOT FOR 20% CUT IN ISD CHARGES
Article Abstract:
Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has proposed a 20 percent cut in ISD / STD charges instead of 50 percent suggested by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The proposal to reduce peak hours to 8 instead of the current 17 hours was rejected by the DoT on grounds that it would adversely affect the revenue. DoT claimed the impact on revenue would be 38 to 55 percent which would hinder the reinvestment process as 65 to 70 percent of funds are to be raised internally. DoT also wants to study the impact of change for a year. The Association of Basic Telecom Operators have asked for a rebalance of tariff for private operators. Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) asked for reduction of public call charges to Re1. Cellular companies suggested a different tariff for metros and other cities with voice mail and call identification services. (nr)

WHEAT HEAT
Article Abstract:
The Government of India has launched an Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) for distribution of wheat. The scheme has received poor response due to poor quality of the wheat issued under the scheme. Of the total monthly allocation of 75,000 tonnes of wheat to Maharashtra, the State Government had allotted 61,550 tonnes of wheat under OMSS in December 1998. The actual lifting by the millers and co-operatives in the State was limited to 47,000 tonnes in December 1998 and 14,000 tonnes in January 1999. The Government had stipulated that 30 percent of the stock lifted must be imported wheat. Wheat millers of Mumbai have expressed their displeasure over this rule. The State Government insists that the damaged stock of imported wheat must be exhausted. The millers, therefore, have decided not to lift stocks of both imported and indigenous wheat. (gs)(psr)
