Daewoo plan to enter U.S. leaves analysts skeptical

Article Abstract:

Industry analysts believe that South Korean car manufacturer Daewoo Motors Corp.'s entry to the U.S. market is not a wise move. Daewoo is planning to introduce its subcompact and compact models in the U.S. in late 1997 or early 1998, with projected annual sales of 100,000 units by 2000. Analysts believe that Daewoo has little chance of succeeding in the highly competitive and sophisticated U.S. market because U.S. consumers have high standards and Daewoo's low quality cars will not sell in this market. Daewoo will have to allot an enormous budget for advertising and marketing to get the attention of American consumers.

Toyota aims for M&A at home; first strategy is to consolidate loose alliance of Japanese affiliates

Article Abstract:

Toyota Motor Corp is not joining other automobile manufacturers that are bolstering their operations through global acquisitions and mergers. Instead, Toyota is seeking to consolidate its loose alliance of affiliates worldwide. By deciding not to join the merger fray, Toyota is playing on one of its major strengths which is the Toyota "group" companies. It plans to bring the core of its over 300 affiliated auto manufacturers and parts suppliers under the umbrella of a holding company. Although it did not eliminate merger possibilities, Toyota does not expect it to happen soon.

South Korea's new breed of consumers is driven toward quality foreign goods

Article Abstract:

A growing number of South Korean consumers are abandoning their preference for domestic brands in favor of quality foreign products. This has become especially evident in the automotive sector, where sales of imported cars continue to grow at an astonishing rate. Industry executives are predicting that sales of US- and European-made automobiles will reach the 12,000-unit mark in 1996.
