Dosh for dons

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom academics have seen slower pay rises than other professionals, but there is still an adequate supply of academic labor except in certain areas. These include supply of potential PhD students who will later become teachers in areas such as economics, engineering and biotechnology. Standards may also be affected with low pay, since top people migrate elsewhere. A major pay rise is unlikely and the government aims to increase student numbers further. There is a need for pay by merit, and more outside funding would help universities.
