Mexico's July 1997 election essentially brought an end to seven decades of uninterrupted one-party rule by the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). This bodes well for Mexico's political future, but the success of such anti-market politicians as Cuauhtemoc Cardenas could hinder economic reform.

Ex-president Carlos Salinas' brother Raul has been accused of planning the murder of reform-minded PRI secretary-general Jose Francisco Ruiz Massieu. The move is seen as a plan to implicate the former president in the plot and strengthen the standing of Pres Ernesto Zedillo.

Upcoming elections in Mexico bring a chance for genuine democratic change, because of electoral reforms put in place by Pres Ernesto Zedillo. The reforms supposedly eliminate most of the unfair advantages enjoyed by Zedillo's Institutional Revolutionary Party.
