The end of the Cold War has brought about a need for restructuring NATO. Originally designed as a deterrent against Eastern European communism, the organization still has tasks to perform and many would like to see changes, such as enlargement to include some for the former communist countries.

A conservation movement started in 1977 has saved acres of farmland across the US from commercial development. Farm owners agree to sell the development rights to a land trust, usually for far less than the land's market value.
