Denmark: Local banks win market share

Article Abstract:

Local banks in Denmark are boosting market share whereas big banks such as Danske Bank and Unibank are closing branch offices and shedding staff. This emerges from a new survey by Lokale Pengeinstitutter, which is an association for 132 local bank and savings banks. Local banks have this year alone opened 16 new branch offices and hired 217 employees. This brings the total number of branch offices for local banks to around 815. Local banks report a 10% increase in revenues from interest rates and bank charges. Local banks have a market share of around 20% of non-corporate clients whereas Unibank and Danske Bank have a 60% share of the market, major regional banks including Jyske Bank and Sydbank have a 15% market share and the remaining 5% is held by foreign banks and other Danish banks.
