Designing a special-needs school

Article Abstract:

Glenveagh School provides accomodation for 150 junior and secondary children with special needs. It has been designed by Kennedy, Fitzgerald and Associates on a linear, deep plan format. Classrooms and communal areas are connected by a 'social concourse' of varying height and volume. Colour and light are used to enhance the excitement of the building which is proving popular with staff and pupils. The steel structure is largely exposed and roof lights are used extensively. The building cost 678.35 pounds sterling per sq meter.

College designed to change

Article Abstract:

The British Record Industry Trust (BRIT) School, Croydon, England is a unique educational establishment, combining training in the arts and technology with the conventional curriculum. The design of the school had to allow a great measure of flexibility both during construction and in use. The 5,000 sq metre building is composed of a accoustically isolated core surrounded by lightweight modules. Building costs were limited to 975 ponds sterling per sq metre and fast track techniques were used.
