The UK detergent market is dominated by two companies which produce the top eight branded detergents. Procter & Gamble accounted for 51.8% of the total value share of textile washing products in 1997, followed by Lever Brothers, who accounted for 27.1% of the sector. Lever Brothers Ltd reported a turnover increase from 605.1 million pounds sterling in 1992 to 612 million pounds sterling by 1996. Proctor & Gamble reported a turnover rise from 1,255 million pounds sterling in 1992 to 1,524 million pounds sterling by 1996.

The UK retail market for surface and toilet cleaners grew by 10.6% in 1995-99, reaching GBP536.7 mil. In 1999, surface cleaners accounted for 49% of the market by value, but the fastest growing sector was toilet care, where sales rose 27% in 1995-99.
