Dexia, Sanpaolo might merge in cross-border banking deal

Article Abstract:

Two midsize European banking groups, Belgium's Dexia S.A. and Italy's Sanpaolo IMI, are in discussions to form a closer relationship that industry analysts are suggesting could eventually lead to a merger of the two companies. If the consolidation were to come about, the newly combined company would have a market capitalization of 37 billion euros at current stock prices, placing it among Europe's top ten financial institutions.
