Article Abstract:

A number of planned European cross-border mergers have been abandoned in 1998 and 1999, and the latest is a planned merger between Algroup and Viag. The announcement of the plan had led to drops in the stock prices of both companies, and there are also cultural differences between the two companies. Viag had performed well under Wilhelm Simson as chief executive, shedding unpromising divisions, with a reorganization planned, but the planned merger with Algroup led to fears that the company was to become too diversified again.

Murkier and murkier

Article Abstract:

There is concern that the conglomerates in South Korea have channeled funds to subsidiaries that are making losses in an illegal manner. Many of these conglomerates own financial services companies. The government is seeking to exercise more control since it is concerned about the control that the conglomerates exercise over non-commercial banking activities. This may include limits on the ownership of financial service operations by the conglomerates.
