Disruption at Kobe Steel imperils global car output

Kobe Steel Ltd. produces 60% of the world supply of high-end wire-rod steel used in making engine valve springs for Japanese, US and European automobiles. Production at the specialized steel manufacturer has stopped completely since the earthquake which devastated Kobe on Jan. 17, 1995. Automobile production has slowed down in some regions due to the shortage of the specialized steel, which is also used to make nuts and bolts. Some analysts warned against too much dependence on one major Japanese supplier. US and European automobile manufacturers said that they have found alternative suppliers and downplayed the impact of the Kobe shutdown.

Bridgestone's Kaizaki plays biggest stakes yet in attempt to break strike at U.S. tire plants

Yoichiro Kaizaki, head of US operations for Bridgestone Corp., faces a new challenge in the six-month-old strike that has crippled business in three of the company's eight US tire facilities. Kaizaki is known as a practical manager and a doer. This trait is most evident in the manner he restructured the ailing Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. which his company acquired in 1988. Kaizaki's latest assignment is to break the deadlock between management and the union.

Mitsubishi seen riding out its host of woes in U.S

Mitsubishi Motor Corp.'s US operation continues to suffer from numerous problems, the latest of which is a sexual harassment class-action lawsuit filed by several female workers. Analysts believe, however, that the strength of the company's global operations will be more than enough to offset any setbacks in the US. Many predict that the company's stock will continue to gain strength despite its problems.
