The Italian market for tobacco: distribution: retail: tabaccai
Article Abstract:
Tobacco distribution in Italy is strictly controlled by the State Monopoly. The Monopoly has the authority to grant distributor's license and in doing so follows a set of criteria. One of the criteria provides that the applicant should be an individual, and not part of a company or chain. In 1996, there were about 58,500 licensed tobacconists in Italy, down 2.4% from 1990. Most of the licensed tobacconists are mixed outlets such as bar/tobacconists, newsagent/tobacconists or perfumer and gift shop/tobacconists.

The Italian market for tobacco: distribution: retail: patentini
Article Abstract:
Hotels, restaurants or bars in Italy who want to sell tobacco products as a service are required to apply for a license. Regulations require the applicant to be an individual, thus barring companies or establishments that are part of a chian from gaining a license. The license allows the "patentini" to purchase tobacco products directly from the local tobacconist and resell them within the hotel, restaurant or bar. There are about 18,000 patentini in Italy.
