Article Abstract:

It is unusual for smaller companies in the UK to have an emergency response and business continuity plan. This makes them vulnerable to being unable to survive in the event of a disaster such as fire or power failure. Directors of small and medium-sized companies should carefully consider priority risks and how they would affect the business. Attention must also be given to transferring, controlling or eliminating risks. It is important to draw up a contingency plan detailing procedures to be followed if business is interrupted.

It is becoming increasingly common in the UK for businesses to introduce more family-friendly employment policies. In most cases, this approach is fostered by pragmatism, rather than altruism, with companies realizing that employees who are assisted in dealing properly with family care will be less likely to require paid time off and more able to concentrate on their work. Some companies are offering childcare leave in the summer holidays, while others have introduced teleworking or job-sharing.
