Dollar diplomacy: Beijing, Taipei woo African states with cash
Article Abstract:
China has been critical of dollar diplomacy exercised by Taiwan, but China has also been using financial incentives to court diplomatic favor in Africa and other regions. Both nations are attempting to maximize their recognition in the international community and gain support in the UN. Along with offering access to its markets, China has been loaning soft funds to poor nations eager to trade diplomatic support for economic development. Some in the US have questioned continued aid to China that is being used in turn to aid other nations, many of which are politically unpopular.

Risks and rewards
Article Abstract:
The recent normalization of relations between South Korea and China brings to a close the Cold War in Asia. Concerned nations, the US and Japan in particular, are hoping that the signing of a normalization agreement between the two countries would bring peace and stability to the Korean peninsula and East Asia. The agreement was a triumph for the Nordpolitik policy of South Korean Pres Roh Tae Woo but Taiwan and North Korea are unhappy over these developments. Observers are particularly worried over North Korea's possible reaction to the agreement.
