Don't gamble the Olympics on Beijing

Article Abstract:

During a Three Tenors concert in Beijing, police arrested and beat a photographer from Agence France-Presse that took pictures of the arrest of a protester. If China wins its bid to hold the 2008 Olympics, there is the chance for similar incidents, and some even view the situation as a repeat of the 1936 Berlin games that fed Germany's nationalism before World War II.

China's farmers learn their rights

Article Abstract:

For years, farmers in China have been victims of corrupt local officials charging inflated fees and levies. It appears, however, that rights consciousness has emerged in Chinese cities and has begun moving to the country. More and more Chinese have begun suing the government.

Working at the Wal-Mart: Kunming 2001

In an effort to modernize, the Chinese city of Kunming is becoming more developed. High rise housing, wider roads, malls and a Wal-Mart now reside in what was once an isolated city with quaint neighborhoods of traditional 2 story housing.
