Pres Clinton's trade sanctions against Japan, Brazil, India and other countries threatens to destroy negotiations on the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. But many believe that tough trade policies against Japan and other countries will force them to open their markets.

Mainland China and Taiwan met for unofficial talks in April 1993, the first in 44 years. The talks were not very successful however, since Taiwanese delegates wanted to talk about trade and Chinese delegates wanted to talk about reunification.
