Norman conquest: Australia's Normandy Mining pursues beachheads aborad

Normandy Mining of Australia is run by Robert Champion de Crespigny and its gold production has risen 125-fold since he took over 12 years ago. Champion de Crespigny is aiming to bring 30% of the company's profits from overseas operations in five years, and is aiming for international success. The company has recently merged with Posgold and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie, its subsidiaries to enable it to grow internationally and some offshore operations have already begun. It is looking at the North American stock exchanges with a view to a future listing.

The flourishing gay and lesbian community in Sydney, Australia, is becoming a tourist attraction in its own right. Many visitors wish to visit gay shops, cafes and art galleries, and the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras attracts almost 1 million people. There are now estimated to be 600,000 gays and lesbians in the city, out of a total population of 5 million. The Gay Games 2002 is expected to be particularly successful in attracting visitors, and will probably earn almost A$100 million for New South Wales.
