English books in Basel

Article Abstract:

Tanner's Bookshop in Basel, Switzerland, which specializes in English language books, was opened by Theo Tanner in the spring of 1942. Because of World War II, Tanner and his colleague August Balz Hilt found it hard to purchase German books and discovered English books from the UK and the US as substitutes. Thus, they became the first Swiss bookseller to import books directly from the UK and the US. The bookshop is also a well-known meeting place for English-speaking people.
