The marketing war between European mineral water companies hs grown to include the US as well as the European market, with Daone SA and Nestle SA being two of the major competitors. Growth in the American market has been in double digits for several years, especially since 1993 when the soft drink industry was obliged to list ingredients in its products. Nestle SA of Switzerland has 28% of the US market in 1998.

The life expectancy of Europeans is higher, according to an Eurostat report. Newborn baby boys can expect a lifespan of about 74 years, and newborn baby girls can anticipate a lifespan of about 80.5 years. The number of those age 60 and over are expected to increase between 1995 and 2020 at a rate of 37%.
