Economical but elegant

Article Abstract:

The conversion of a small Edwardian semi-detached house in Mapperley, UK by architects Letts Wheeler Architecture and Design provides an example of what can be achieved on a low budget. Letts Wheeler and the client, a graphic designer, co-operated closely on the project, and the result is an unusual blend of old and new. In order to save money, minimal repairs were made to the original house, with investment being focused on a few key areas such as the sitting room and kitchen/dining room. The use of recycled materials where possible reflects a commitment to being environmentally friendly.

International service: western firms in the United Arab Emirates want Western-style design. A company set up five years ago still fills a gap in the market

Article Abstract:

Western companies in the United Arab Emirates prefer western-style design and Jon Steiner and Mehdi Moazzen set up CitySpace in Dubai providing professional services for clients new to the city. The company is knowledgeable about local bureaucracy and is familiar with current corporate design trends. They have their own specially trained workforce, but can also recommend highly skilled local craftspeople. Its projects have included an airport at Karachi and they are considering a move into the leisure industry.

Multi-level minimalism

Article Abstract:

Architect Fiona McLean of McLean Quinlan brief was to encompass a minimalist and modern interior design in an 1840s house. The owners of the house in Ladbroke Grove, West London, England, wanted to reestablish the six storey house as a family home. It had previously housed seven flats. Building work included a new rear terrace. McLean used a number of innovative design ideas for storage space. Curtains are not used in the building and lights are recessed into walls and ceilings.
