Electrabel acquiert 7,8% du capital de Cegedel
Article Abstract:
The Belgian group, Electrabel, has purchased, from the Swiss group Indelec, 52,326 shares (7.8% of the capital) of Cegedel, the Luxembourg electricity company. Cegedel distributes 64% of the electrical energy consumed in Luxembourg, electricity which is brought from the from the German group RWE. With this purchase, Electrabel reinforces its long-term presence in Luxembourg. The company was chosen by Luxembourg to construct and operate a 350 MW gas turbine steam power station at Esch-sur-Alzette. The unit, which represents an investment of between BFr 5.5mn and 6mn, will be operational at the end of the year 2000. Its production output will be destined for the Luxembourg based iron and steel specialists, Arbed (100 MW), to Cegedel (100 MW) and to Tractabel for use in the Belgian network (150 MW).

Real Software acquiert la majorit du capital

The Belgian software editor, Real Software, has purchased 50% plus one of the shares of Eider Computers Ltd, a British company that creates specialist healthcare software, mainly in the field of oncology. Eider has reported a strong rise in profits since its creation in 1988 (expected net profits for 1998 are BFr 12mn) The rate of turnover is predicted to rise by 50% to Bfr 30mn in 1998. Its software is used widely in highly renowned medical centres in the UK, as well as by European pharmaceutical groups such as Johnson and Johnson and Boehringer-Mannheim. The purchase of the majority of Eider's capital by Real Software will enable the latter to expand its activity in the pharmaceutical and health care sectors. The firm is likely to announce further acquisitions in the coming weeks.

As part of a strategy to become of the biggest actors in plastic profiles world-wide, Tessenderlo has put a foothold in Britain, the second-largest market in this business in Europe. The Belgian chemical group has just taken over 75% of Fairbrook, a British PVC profiles extrusion specialist which posted GB 25mn in turnover in 1997 and has a 350 staff. Fairbrook has two subsidiaries, HL Plastics which makes tailored extrusion works for different industries, and Eurocell Profiles, a specialist of profiles for windows and the construction industry. Tessenderlo has the opportunity of increasing to 100% its share in Fairbrook within five years.
