Emerging-market measles

Article Abstract:

Emerging markets have been affected by the devaluation of the Thai baht, with Latin American countries affected after the initial crisis in Asia. There is less risk of contagion from Russia to most eastern European economies since their trade links with Russia tend to be weak. Commodity prices have been affected by problems in Asia, and this has hit Latin America. Petroleum prices and industrial commodity prices have dropped. Investors have also become more risk-averse since the Asian crisis.

The second coming?

Article Abstract:

US cuts in interest rates are seen to have solved a crisis in world financial markets, and emerging markets are seeing rises in stock prices. There is more optimism about the Japanese economy, which helps commodity prices and sentiment about Asia. Investors are still wary of emerging markets, and only funds specializing in emerging market stocks are seeking to return to the market. Recessions have hit many emerging economies, and many emerging stock markets are small, volatile and illiquid.

Buy now, while stocks last

Article Abstract:

US financial markets will be affected by Treasury surpluses which mean that the Treasury bond market could shrink, though the forecasts may be wrong. Stocks are also disappearing with stock buyback schemes. Companies are issuing debt to buy back expensive stocks, and this is linked to stock option schemes which mean that managers have an incentive to buy back stocks. This trend could lead to problems with corporate solvency when the US encounters economic problems.
