Empty vessels?

Article Abstract:

There are arguments that political parties are becoming less important in mature democracies, partly because they have less of a social function. Values and beliefs have become less important and parties are seen as having moved toward the ideological center. Interest groups have become more important, while party membership has fallen. Parties still nominate candidates for public office and can obtain public funds. There are differences of opinion as to the extent to which parties have converged in terms of their ideology.

Quite an earthquake

Article Abstract:

The Swiss People's Party came second with 44 seats in elections in Oct 1999 while the Socialists have gained 51 seats, the radicals gained 43 seats and 35 seats were gained by the Christian Democrats. The People's Party gain may mean no major changes in government, though a right wing government could be set up. The behavior of the three main parties other than the People's Party will decide the issue. Meanwhile, a referendum is to be held on relations with the European Union.
