English Millennium projects already way behind schedule

Article Abstract:

The UK Millennium Commission has admitted that problems are being experienced with its eight 'landmark' projects in England designed to mark the beginning of the 21st century. At present, only one of these projects, the 100 million pounds sterling Earth Centre in Doncaster, England, is set for completion before the beginning of the 21st century. Better progress is being seen with schemes outside England, with the 54 million Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, for example, scheduled for completion in 1999.

Article Abstract:

Andrew Finch is the head of the Architects Registration Board which was established in April 1997. He wants the board to be a lean and tightly run operation and sees himself as a strategic thinker with a common-sense approach. He feels it is important to establish good links with the charter bodies, particularly with the RIBA. He is already working with Chris Colbourne, the RIBA deputy director general and education director, on formalization of the education paper.

Registration shake-up takes on legislative form

Article Abstract:

The UK government's planned Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration bill includes provisions to establish a strict new architectural registration board. The board, created from a transformed architects' registration council (ARCUK), would have extensive disciplinary powers, going as far as to issue 'erasure orders' for architects deemed to be incompetent. Some architects fear that the new board would charge extremely high registration fees.
