The scramble for defense contracts will intensify in the wake of the Boeing-McDonnell merger. European companies such as British Aerospace may find their market share shrinking. In 1996, Boeing and Mcdonnell combined, had over 50% of all orders for jet aircraft.

A decline in the fortunes of the world's airlines is coinciding with a glut of commercial aircraft, of which about 10% are now laying idle. Airlines trying to cope are not buying planes, because for the first time since 1945 air travel declined in 1991.
