Entry, exit and shakeouts in the United States in new manufactured products

Article Abstract:

Shakeouts refer to the rapid decline in the number of firms in an industry despite continued growth in output. These phenomena are most likely to occur when new manufactured products are introduced. Their importance made shakeouts a favorite research topic among those involved in industrial organization in recent years. The factors that contribute to shakeouts are studied.

Industry shakeouts and technological change

Article Abstract:

A study on the evolution of four new products, automobiles, tires, television and penicillin that experienced an initial rise and then extreme shakeouts in their number of manufacturers. The causes for this extreme shake out due to technological innovations and the results are analyzed.

The presence of information cooperation amongst firms is studied based on the data from German innovating firms. The effects of formal and informal cooperation on spillover of knowledge are also examined.
