Extensions to the generalised assignment heuristic for vehicle routing

Article Abstract:

Tabu search heuristics need substantial computing times and several parameter settings when solving vehicle routing problems. Hence, there is still a need for relatively fast and effective heuristics when good quality solutions must be provided fast. The generalized assignment heuristic for the basic vehicle routing problem can be extended by adjusting seed positions to decrease the optimal objective value for the generalized assignment problem. When used with a simple Lagrangean heuristic, this provides a relatively fast method for obtaining solutions within a few percent of the best known values for benchmark problems.
