Article Abstract:

The Greek government believes that there are good prospects for the country meeting the criteria to join European monetary union. The budget deficit has been reduced to 2.2% of gross domestic product, while the public sector debt, although still high, is falling, as is inflation. Prime Minister Costas Simitis hopes that Greece will be formally accepted into European monetary union by spring 2000, a move favoured by the large majority of Greeks.
