Article Abstract:

The incorporation of Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic into NATO alters the European geopolitical landscape, but the question of who will pay the cost of defending former Soviet Bloc nations remain unanswered. Prospects for other ex-Warsaw Pact countries' membership in NATO are examined.

NATO goes a-wooing

Article Abstract:

NATO began talks with Russian officials in Jan 1997, in an effort to reduce Russia's anxiety about NATO's plans for expansion. It is likely that countries such as Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic will join by 1999. Russia wants concessions and a special relationship with NATO.

Russia snarls: NATO

Article Abstract:

Russia is opposed to the expansion of NATO, and vows to increase nuclear military security if it occurs. Russia is also urging new members not to join the military part of NATO. This reluctance by Russia is making NATO expansion difficult.
