Europe's next commissioners

Article Abstract:

The European commission is to be headed by Romano Prodi, and there have been calls for the reform of the commission after it collapsed under Jacques Santer. The commission has lost popularity and credibility and has suffered from weak leadership, though it has been no less corrupt or incompetent than previous commissions. The president will have more power in opposing nominees to serve on the commission and changing their posts. This should help in the running of the commission. There are seven real posts and 19 commission members seeking posts, so Prodi should select seven able people to take on the key posts.

The challenge awaiting Romano Prodi

Article Abstract:

Romano Prodi has been selected to head the European Union's (EU's) European Commission following the resignation of Jacques Santer in Mar 1999. His nomination has been supported by all the EU heads of government, which have also supported a reform program for the commission. The program may include an external review of the financial management of the commission. The commission has come to lack a sense of purpose and priorities, and questions that Prodi should ask include the meaning of the idea of a strong commission.

Romano Prodi, Europe's lord-in-waiting

Article Abstract:

Romano Prodi heads the European Commission, yet a new commission has yet to be installed following the resignation of the old commission in Mar 1999. The members of the new commission have to be approved by the European Parliament, and this is not likely to occur until Sep or Oct 1999. The acting commission is carrying on with work in progress though it is not permitted to carry out new initiatives. Romano Prodi was nominated in Mar 1999, but cannot start his task until the new commission is appointed.
