Export worries

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics has predicted a fall in the 1992 GNP from 7% to 6.4%. This calculation is based on a decline in the country's exports from May-Aug 1992 and a rapid appreciation of the Taiwanese dollar. There has also been an increase in Taiwanese imports and the trade surplus is expected to fall to less than US $10 billion. Economic analysts attribute the decline in Taiwan's economic development to long-term negative growth in the manufacturing sector and abnormal growth in the service sector.

Wealth of worries

Article Abstract:

The strength of Taiwan's economy can be seen from the country's large foreign exchange reserves. Foreign exchange reserves reached a record high of $84.6 billion in May 1992, enough to cover import costs for 15 months. However, the Central Bank of China is encountering problems in the management of the country's foreign exchange reserves. Economists say that there is a need for a more open way of handling the country's foreign exchange reserves.
