FAA takes new measures against backdrop of renewed criticism
Article Abstract:
The Federal Aviation Administration has warded a US$75-million contract to contractor L-3 Communications of New York state to buy up to 60 eXaminer 3DX 6000 explosives detection systems over a three-year period. The eXaminer 3DX 6000 sytem is a second-generation computer tomography scanner that has been designed to detect most types of explosive material which are commercially available. The first four units acquired will be used for acceptance-testing procedures, operational testing and to finalize training procedures aor ailrine operators.

Dual-purpose technology helps to save space
Article Abstract:
Latest advances in airport security equipment eliminate the need for a redesign of airports to combat terrorism and narcotics trafficking. These advances have led to the development of smaller, less obstrusive devices that can perform two or more functions. One of the new devices, Z-Scan from US-based EG & G Astrophysics, can detect both explosives and narcotic contraband in hold baggage. Another detection device, Ionscan from Barringer Technologies of Murray Hill, NJ, is one of the smallest detectors around. Ionscan uses trace detection methods to spot explosives and contraband.

Industry welcomes US future spending plans
Article Abstract:
The airport security equipment industry will benefit from the planned high level of funding by the Federal Aviation Administration for security equipnment purchases. A total of $100 million has been alloted for 1999, up from a total of $159 that was used for 1997 and 1998. The majority of FAA equipment purchases will be used to retrofit existing airport terminal, particularly in the checked baggage area. These include explosive detection systems, advanced technology X-rays and various trace detection devices.
