FINAL ESTIMATE FOR 1998-99 COFFEE CROP 230,000 TONNES

The Coffee Board has announced a final estimate of 230,000 tonnes for India's coming coffee crop in the 1998-99 season. The previous estimate was 228,000 tonnes for the 1997-98 season. The final estimate for the coming Arabica crop is 96,865 tonnes while that of the Robusta crop is 133,135 tonnes. The final estimate for Karnataka, the country's main coffee growing state, is placed at 159,430 tonnes. The final estimate for Kerala is 50,625 tonnes while that for Tamil Nadu is 17,305 tonnes. Article Abstract:

The Coffee Board has projected a target of 240,000 tonnes of coffee for 1998-99 and 300,000 tonnes for 2001-2002 AD. Small growers account for 41 percent of the total coffee output of India. They will have to increase their production from less than 800 kg per hectare to 1,000 kg, while large growers will have to raise their productivity to 1,200 kg from 1,000 kg per hectare if the targets have to be reached. The area under coffee cultivation will also have to be increased. (khr)

Article Abstract:

The budwood estimates by the Coffee Board indicates a crop of 289,939 tonnes for 1999-2000 against budwood estimates of 242,000 tonnes for 1998-99. India may achieve a coffee production of 275,000 tonnes in 1999-2000 as the variation between the budwood projection and final estimate has been less than 5 percent in the last few years. (khr)
