The sun also rises

Article Abstract:

Japan's economy is beginning to show signs of sustainable growth after enduring four years of stagnation. The country's stock market has increased 50% over 1995 levels and corporate pretax profits increased by 23% in the fiscal year ending in Mar 1996. The economy's recovery has been assisted by a decline in the dollar value of the yen and record low interest rates from Japan's central bank. Japanese companies that shifted large amounts of manufacturing to other parts of Asia have enjoyed increased profitability.

Growth at last

Article Abstract:

Japan's longest post-war economic slump is over, though analysts disagree on the size of the rebound in the fiscal year that started April 1, 1996. GDP growth of 0.9% in the preceding quarter, led by a 2.4% rise in private consumption, could fuel growth of 2% to 4% for the year, thanks in part to the end of the banking crisis. Japanese overseas production now matches or exceeds the value of exports, so the trade surplus has plummeted. Keeping profits up will entail cost-cutting, meaning increased joblessness.
