Belgium is broadening its experiment with regional government to satisfy the demands of its two main ethnic groups, the Flemish and the Walloons, for greater political autonomy. The central government will retain control over foreign affairs and monetary policy.

Belgium fights the demon

Belgium is in danger of breaking up, as French-speaking Wallonia and Dutch-speaking Flanders are increasingly at odds with one another. Flanders is the more prosperous region of the country and the Flemish are tired of what they feel are subsidies of Wallonia.
