Familiar names dominate national election season

Article Abstract:

The Philippine elections, scheduled for May 11, 1998, have become a virtual popularity contest with majority of the leading candidates coming from the sports or showbusiness worlds. Top running senatorial bets include television personality Loren Legarda, movie star Ramon Revilla, and basketball player/coach Robert Jaworski. Incumbent vice-president, movie star, and presidential bet Joseph Estrada relies on the same formula by showing his old films during campaigns in depressed areas. Local journalists have criticized the batch of candidates as 'insulting to Filipino intelligence' and 'uninspired.'

Ramos offers a model for Asian leadership

Article Abstract:

Former Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos is fast shaping up as the appropriate role model for many Asian leaders. Looking back at the Ramos administration's success shows that Ramos was able to shape the course of Philippine politics and economy with his strong leadership style, his hands-on management and his adherence to democratic principles. Ramos was able to stave off harsh criticisms of his administration by ensuring the principles of transparency and accountability exists in his policies.
