Support is waning for the Maastricht bill, which was to have ratified European Community trade guidelines by 1992. UK Prime Minister John Major has long been a supporter of the trade agreement, but an attempt to force it through could be an unwise political move.

Sir Leon Brittan, commissioner for competition policy for the European Community, suggested that GATT be expanded to establish and control competition rules. The future of GATT if the Uruguay round fail is also discussed.
