Fast-track twins
Article Abstract:
Boeing Co and Airbus Industrie are campaigning for a review of the Extended range Twin-engine OPerationS (ETOPS) aviation rule. ETOPS requires twin-engine aircraft to remain within 60 minutes-flying time of adequate airfields, with the period extended to 180 minutes for qualified aircraft. However, Boeing and Airbus petition that developments in aircraft technology be considered for their twin-engine B777 and A330 aircraft. Airbus believes its aircraft qualifies for long routes since it uses technology with proven safety, while Boeing requests that results of simulated tests be accredited substitutes for the required in-flight performance data.

Stormclouds gather
Article Abstract:
Prospects for the airline industry may not follow general economic forecasts, as price wars and postponed refleeting plans are expected to characterize the industry until 1993. Although Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, Singapore Airlines and Malaysian Airline System generated profits, all three recorded a decrease from 1991 figures. However, the airlines still performed better than most others which operated at a loss, including Thai Airways International, All Nippon Airways and Japan Air Lines. The necessity to hold on to markets has been emphasized by the fare cuts instituted by US and European airlines.
