Fathering life and other feats
Article Abstract:
Many different issues were discussed at the 1999 meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr Craig Venter, head of Celera Genomics, spoke about efforts to identify the minimum set of genes a creature requires to survive and reproduce. This work may give an insight into how life originated, and could also simplify, or even need, the creation of the first artificial living organism. He acknowledged that this work raises sensitive ethical issues.
