Article Abstract:
Russia is carrying out an operation against separatists in the republic of Dagestan, which has been hit by unemployment and poverty and which is inhabited by some 30 ethnic groups. Russian prime minister, Vladimir Putin, forecasts an early victory. Russia claims that the rebels are Islamists aided by outsiders from the Islamic world. Boris Yeltsin, Prime minister, could use the conflict in Dagestan as a reason for postponing elections, especially since he faces a strong opposition.
