First steps: Cambodian premiers' visit breaks ice with Vietnam

Article Abstract:

Vietnam's relations with Cambodia's emerging government began favorably with an official visit to Hanoi by Cambodia's co-premiers, Prince Norodom Ranariddh and Han Sen. On Aug 25, 1993 they issued a communique in which they acknowledged the Vietnamese government's hospitable reception and commented on traditionally cordial Cambodian-Vietnamese relations. Several points of contention were put off for later discussion including the desire of about 30,000 Vietnamese refugees to go back to Cambodia and the dispute over the two countries' land and sea boundaries.

Cambodian assault: loggers are quick to exploit the peace

Article Abstract:

Indiscriminate logging activity has been rampant in Cambodia since peace returned to the war-ravaged country. Its forests are divided among the four ruling factions but logging activity is spearheaded by rich foreign loggers who strike deals with the cash-strapped factions. Serious deforestation is likely to block Cambodia's economic development, according to a UN Development Programme study. Already, the UN has issued stern warnings to this effect to the factions, but little heed has been taken since logging is a main source of income for the government.
