Flying in circles

Article Abstract:

Alliances have become increasingly common between airlines, and this can mean that passengers have to fly using airlines they would prefer not to use. Consolidation was forecast for the industry but regulations have prevented this, and alliances have taken their place. There are four major groups, and they could be affected by Air France's decision to form part of a group of which Delta Air Lines is the leader. Alliances could pool facilities and thus improve their cost savings.

Let the market take off

Article Abstract:

European competition commissioner Karel Van Miert disapproves of prospective selling or trading of landing slots by airlines. He believes airlines should give up the slots free of charge to help make room for newer airlines. A government auction of the slots might be the best solution, however.
