For the birds: feathers are flying in Hong Kong's wetlands skirmish

Article Abstract:

A convoluted battle with shifting sides has erupted over developers' requests for permission to build in the Deep Bay area and the adjacent Mai Po Marshes, in Hong Kong's northeast corner near Shenzen. The developers are planning to include a nature reserve, and Henderson Land, their leader, initially convinced World Wide Fund for Nature Hong Kong to support his request. Now, however, new information on the area has persuaded the environmentalists to defect. The bay is vital to some of Asia's rarest birds.

Feathered friends

Article Abstract:

The Chinese resort town Beidaihe is one of the premier bird-watching spots in the world. Roughly 300 species pass through on migration every year, peaking in May; among them are Siberian and red-crowned cranes, grasshopper warblers, bluethroats, and Saunders gulls. The site is on the East China coast, 280 km east of Peking. IT is perhaps the only reasonably priced and well-run reserve in China, and has contributed greatly to Chinese knowledge of birds.
